Steve Jobs announces Apples' decision to ban FLASH from iPhone and iPad platforms in favor of HTML5 support
FLASH-an Adobe created technology. It allowed Web browsers to display interactive content such as video and scalable vector graphics. Flash was used for games and other interactive graphic applications; the most common example is: YouTube Flash was created during the PC era-for PC's with a mouse.
HTML 5 (HyperTextMarkupLanguage)-a text based code that browsers read from Web servers.
The Controversy:
FLASH-is not a standard. Adobe retains full control over the Flash format
HTML5-a text based code that browsers can read from Web servers. (more accessible)
FLASH-is a browser "Plug-in". It needs to be installed seperately from your browser and operating system.
HTML 5-runs "in the browser"
FLASH- has the worst security records 2009. Does not perform well on mobile devices (no mouse)
HTML 5-Not taxing on the Mac. Security is controlled better.
FLASH-Battery life an issue when decoding video. Uses too much juice. Doesn't support touch based devices.
HTML 5-Mobile era is about low power devices, touch interfaces, and open Web standards. All areas where Flash falls short.
Apple has left the pasts behind. I agree that this decision will be instrumental in speeding up the adoption of HTML 5 in browsers and applications. I'm sure Adobe knew that in time Flash would be "shoved out" with the huge market of mobile devices. Once they decided to loosen the "grip" they became more competetive and useable.
